Expert Voices: Podcast Spotlight of the Week - Boston K9 Culture
In this week’s episode of The Doggie Stoic Podcast, I sat down with legendary animal trainer Joel Silverman to discuss the missing link in modern dog training: the relationship. Joel shares his incredible journey from training killer whales and dolphins at SeaWorld in the 1970s to becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after animal coordinators, then dives deep into the realities of balanced training—breaking down the flaws of the "pure positive" movement, the necessity of the word "no", and why you cannot clicker-train a 6,000-pound orca to respect you without a bond. We also explore his signature "What Color Is Your Dog?" methodology, from identifying temperament types to understanding why a "cookie cutter" approach fails most dogs. This episode blends iconic stories from animal training history with hard truths about what it actually takes to lead your dog.
Lead the Pack: Business Mindset Tips to Help You Win
How Changing my Business Model 3X’d my Dog Training Business Revenue
In this presentation, I share how I transitioned my business from a stressful, cyclical operation to my most profitable year yet by abandoning the traditional "Board and Train" model. While Board and Trains offer high upfront fees, they suffer from low Lifetime Value (LTV), high anxiety regarding dog regression, and limited client interaction.
My solution is the "Day Training" model. Instead of keeping dogs for weeks, I propose a system where dogs learn essential skills—recall, impulse control, and neutrality—during the day and return to their owners at night. This hybrid approach drastically reduces trainer stress by eliminating overnight liabilities and fosters a better work-life balance.
From a business perspective, this shift caused my recurring income and referrals to multiply 3 fold. Because I see clients daily, I stay "top of mind" and can address behavioral issues in real-time, leading to better long-term results, happier customers and more referrals. This scalable model is the future for trainers looking to move from survival mode to thriving profits.
